Depending on what side of Cary you are on, you might want to take 540 to 264 bypass to 64. We did a lot of exploring on the way on our trip in December, but did it straight through on the way back. We were staying almost right there as you enter the island at Whalebone. Took us 3:40 from hotel to our house, stopping once for gas.

Default Sunday afternoon Ferry reservations?

Next question: on Sunday afternoon do y'all think I will need a reservatiaon on the Swan Quarter or alternatively, the Cedar Island, Ferry?

In the height of summer, yes, but now?

Ferry reservations are a good idea even now. Keep in mind Wake county had a teacher work day today, alot of folks headin to salt for a nice weekend. and it is one of those things your better off for doing then risking it and not getting on. Also a NC man tip if your surf fishing squid works and will stay on the hook but the best bait in southern waters is fresh shrimp. You wont catch spec trout, gray trout, pompano, spots or Virginia mullet with squid, squid will get you spiney dog fish skates and some blue fish and a croaker. Shrimp will catch it all and drum as well.
