But make sure you don't speed through the last county in Virginia before the NC boundary (can't remember the name right now). Based on the number of acquaintances who have been given a ticket in that county, I think speeding fines is a major source of the county's income.

We just drove down last week from NY and we hit major traffic in DC heading into VA. This was at 7am so count on stopping in traffic. They are doing major construction. Once you are a little ways into VA you should be fine. If you take 85 from Va into NC, it's a smooth ride with the speed limit at 70mph. There is hardly anyone on the road, but there were cops so be on the lookout.

If you flew a helicopter! lol

Herndon is about 20 miles west of DC at the doorstep of Dulles Airport. You'll have to drive through the Fairfax County/Prince William County traffic, but once you get on 95 in Prince William it should be smooth sailing going South. You'll be able to laugh at all the people stuck in bumper to bumper going North.

I totally agree. I was not more than 15 minutes into that county from NC and got pulled over by a trooper. He said I was doing 81(considered reckless) He drop it down 1 point (80). Claim it was only 150.00 compared to the reckless 450.00.

My cousin got a ticket in the same county a week later going back to Georgia.

BE CAREFUL!!!!

I wonder if it goes against my license since it's out of state. Does anyone knows?

There's construction on 85 both ways. This makes what should be a 4.5 hour trip from Herndon to Durham into a 6 hour trip.

That's why you should get off at US-1 South and take that to 540 to 40 or US 70. I did that last week on my way back from Northern Va.

Really? What's the driving time if you do that? We're headed up to Herndon next weekend.

The extra drive from Raleigh to Chapel Hill might not make it worth it.

Might consider Amtrak. Six hours DC - Raleigh.

My son got shafted in VA. Cost him over $500.

Watch your speed.
