Seriously thinking of purchasing a home in Mebane. I noticed that depending on location high school could be Orange County or Alamance County. Any feedback on these school systems. Seems that Orance is better rated, but taxes are higher. How much of a difference would the taxes be on a 250K home between the two counties. Also anybody have a high school student with ADHD. My son stuggles with school as while the hyper activity has calmed down now that he is older, the focusing and keeping things orderly are still an issue. Which school do you think would be a better fit for him. We had him in smaller classes in NJ, until high school, but since being in the regular class his grades are not very good. He really fell behind while being in those small classrooms. We are living in NC now, and he is in regular classes but srtuggles with his school work. Any opinions would be appreciated especially those who have a son or daughter with ADHD. We took him off all meds about 2 years ago, as we felt he could not take them forever.

I can't answer as to the ADHD, but I can answer as to the tax rate.

For Alamance County it is .58 and for Mebane City it is .5, giving you a total tax rate of 1.08. For Orange County it is .95 plus Mebane City of .5 gives you 1.45 for the Orange side. So your total tax on a $250K house on the Alamance side would be $2700 and on the Orange side it would be $3625 per year. You could also have a Mebane address, but be outside the city limits, in which case your tax would be much lower because you would only have county taxes + fire without the city taxes.

As for schools, we preferred to stay on the Orange side because of the schools, but many people seem happy enough with the Alamance schools too. You can look up their scores on NC School Report Cards (http://www.ncreportcard.com/src/ - broken link)

You can also search people responses about the area in the Greensboro, Winston Salem area forum.
Mebane is in area of the state that can meet both metro areas
Good luck
