Just wanted to post my experience with the NCDMV in regard to switching my NY license over to NC as well as getting tags for 2 cars I just bought in NY. After doing my homework I knew proof of insurance was required to switch over your license. I'm moving to Raleigh but wanted to avoid any lines since I only had a day or so to get everything done so I decided to take a short drive to Smithfield where I could get my insurance, license and tags all within 5 minutes drive from each other. The entire process took less than 2 hours. I even forgot my DOT medical (for my CDL) and the woman in DMV was nice enough to have my wife fax it over from NY. If that was the DMV in NY they would have told me too bad, come back when you have it. All in all, it was a very positive experience and my wife and I are looing foward to starting our new life in NC.

i know its been awhile since this post, but interested in your cdl conversion. Did you have to take all the written tests for your license, did you have to drive. Thanks.

My husband and I both went last week. He has his CDL, so all he needed was to fork over $150 to get his.
I had to take a computerized test and failed! I have to study the handbook and go back. It was pretty embarassing.

I have been licensed in AZ, MI, and NC, and by far the NC test was the hardest! I almost failed myself.... one more question and I would've been toast!

I've been tested in DC, MD, and NC. To me, the NC test is in desperate need of a re-write. Many questions aren't especially clear. It's difficult to provide the correct answer when you're not sure what the question is.

thanks...KY is looking better all the time..the start up costs of moving to NC just keep adding up. I stress about tests even though I have drove a bus for 20 years and I complain about the $60 it costs here in IL!!

What else besides proof of insurance did you need to get your license? We just moved here from California. Was your other license (from NY) sufficient with the proof of insurance? And the cost was $150? Thanks for the info!

They will confiscate your old license when they issue your NC one. Also please note that the DMV does not accept credit cards/debit cards. Cash or check only. We did not know this and had to find an ATM.

Yeah, what's up with that? Even the Postal Service accepts plastic payment these days.
