I've been carpooling for about 3.5 years now, with as few as two and and many as four passengers. Have four passengers now, and it's great having to fill my gas tank only once a month. So, with four passengers, I am using 75% less gas from a commuting perspective.

Traveling from Fuquay-Varina to RTP, off-peak commuting (work 7-4) keeps my commute to ~ 30 minutes. Add 30 minutes to either departure time, and add 10-15 minutes to the commute. So with the early departures, I am saving about 25% when compared to later departures.

I just wish I lived close enough to ride my bike.

That's very good.

Now, see if you can cut it even more by negotiating either a complete or partial remote work arrangement with your employers. Perhaps your job really doesn't require on-site presence all the time in order for the actual work to get done? Could you do any of it at home, or from the coffeeshop that you could bike to?

great ideas above !

I am self employed and cannot really carpool. As I only drive about 5000 miles a year the price of gas has not affected me as badly as it has many others. I have discovered a nice gadget to use in my car ( any car, in fact, as long as it is an OBDII. All acrs are since 1998 )

It is called a SCANGAUGE and it is simply a small computer that tells you everything the car ECU sees. The important info here is;

Instant gas mileage and TODAY's mileage. By checking those two you can very quickly adjust your driving style and notice your mileage climb. I am saving about 10% now compared to last year. Nothing to brag about but significant nonetheless
