Sharks-Hurricanes trade:
Brent Burns and Lane Pederson for Steven Lorentz, goalie prospect Eetu Makiniemi and a conditional 2023 3rd-round pick.
Sharks are retaining 33 percent of Burns contract.
Stevie messed up bad in the playoffs, with the instigation of the fight. That hurt.
Looks like Brent is going to be their only big splash. Marchment was about to sign with the Canes, but Dallas was able to draw him away.
This year is not going to be a kind one for Carolina unless all of the underperformers (you know who you are ) step up. They are certainly not a better team today.

I think there is plenty of work to be done yet.
Burns is an upgrade over DeAngelo, IMO.
Between DeAngelo, Trocheck, and Cole, we just dumped 3 of our 4 most penalized, undisciplined players.
We've dealt with our UFAs, and our NHL RFA,s except for Necas and Bear.
Sitting on just over $13 million in cap space, and we spend the Cap.
We need to add 5 to the Roster. Going to have to work the lower rungs of the salary ladder.
Drury,
Or, Noesen.
Both of whom are ready for the NHL.
Or, Necas, who is likely tradeable, if needed.
Other ex-Canes:
Brad Malone, Edmonton, 2 yrs
Julien Gauthier, NY Rangers, 1 yr
Eetu Luostarinen, Florida, 2 yrs
Andrew Poturalski, Seattle, 2 yrs
Greg McKegg, Edmonton, 2 yrs
Phil Di Giuseppe, Vancouver, 1 yr
Haydn Fleury, Tampa Bay, 2 yrs
Turns 1-year, $1M deal with Tony DeAngelo, forward Steven Lorentz, goaltending prospect Eetu Makiniemi and a conditional 2023 3rd-round pick into:
A 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Brent Burns, Lane Pederson, Dylan Coghlan and Max Pacioretty
This has been a great few days for the Canes! TDA was good but I like Burns better... and Burns gives us a mature veteran presence which was a major missing piece.
Canes still have a few slots to fill. Would be nice if Drury and/or Suzuki have the kind of season that Jarvis had last year, but that's far from assured. Would also be nice if Jarvis avoids the sophomore jynx.
Management has doubled down on Kotkaniemi. The verdict is still out on him as a top-six player.
With one exception, all the UFA signings yesterday and so far today have been small fry. Niederreiter must still be looking for the deal he wants. Likewise Stepan.
Ex-Canes Ladd, de Haan, Rask, Kuokkanen, Sekera, Sutter, Dzingel, Murphy, Tennyson, Carrick, Leivo, Nash, and Gerbe are looking for work.
I'm still in shock that Don Waddell got MaxPac for nothing. Well maybe not since Vegas has cap problems but how did no one else get in on that?
Burns is a good addition. Older guy yes but he's never won the Cup and this gives him that chance.
I think we added some solid veteran presence in two guys with some hunger for the Cup.
He says hopefully....
