So two girls saying that they were in a rehab program for single mothers to get them sales skills and they're selling bottles of cleaner for $40 a pop here in Cary?!!?? Anyone else see them or people selling the same stuff? Just wondered if they were legit.

Did they have any kind of literature on the program they are supposedly with? Even a name? Or did they just say "We're with a program...". If the latter, it was probably a scam.

I've had people try to sell cleaning stuff to me for $40 a bottle before. I'll guarantee you that whatever it is, it isn't worth $40. But on the other hand, I think that they are legit in the sense that they ARE trying to sell you a worthless product. They don't have some other agenda, like casing your house.

However, it is illegal to solicit in Cary without a solicitation permit. Here is an old news release on a similar subject: Police Begin Solicitation Crack-Down, Urge Caution When Dealing with Solicitors (http://www.townofcary.org/news/news99/solicttn.htm - broken link)

I'd suggest you call the police non-emergency line for solicitations like this. I've done it before (when I had several solicitations over just a couple of days), and so that you are more prepared than me, the questions they asked included:
* What did the person look like?
* How were they dressed?
* Which direction did they walk when they left your house?

I expected the first two, but I was stumped on the third.

They had a laminated flyer with all of the things that the product can do. One was about 20 the other about 40 year old black women, street clothes, with school backpacks with their cleaner in it. When I objected to the $39.95 the price went down to $25. I gave them a $10 "donation" to make them go away which they were happy with.

I agree they were "legitimately" selling me snake oil and probably not casing the place.

Two guys selling the same stuff visited us today. They were also in some type of rehab program, so it think its legit. Dh was impressed with the product, but not $40 impressed. Apparently their cut is 50%. We are in SW Cary

Possibly scam. Possibly casing for a burglary.

Never open the door to these folks. In our apt community, we have "No Soliciting" signs at the entrances and run solicitors out.

Most are not really in a rehab. They are traveling sales groups that move from area to area. The main scam is magazine subscriptions to "earn a scholarship".

I had two African-American girls come to my house selling cleaning product for $42.50 for two bottles, one pink, one clear. I said I'd buy them together and suddenly the price was $42.50 per bottle. I learned this because I left to get them each a Pepsi and they discussed me thinking I couldn't hear them.

They said they were single mothers, one lives in Atlanta with a 9 month old, one lives in New Jersey with a 5 year old. Showed me photos of their respective children.

They talked the usual line about not wanting to be on welfare so they are driven to different states to sell door to door. They rang their ride during the sales pitch and asked me for the cross-street so they could be collected at the cul-de-sac near our house.

No mention of rehab whatsoever. Lots of talk about difficulty being a single mother (which is v. true in America!) Of course, I can't verify their situation.

The product is 'Clear Miracle' and the company is Magnificent Cleaning Solutions in Michigan City, IN.

Wish I had not answered the door, frankly. Stupid on my part.

If they didn't see me in the kitchen I wouldn't have answered. Did one of them have a heart tattoo on her chest?

I rarely answer the door when there are solicitors. My dogs usually scare them off.
