Hi,
I was wondering if there is a basic homestead exemption in the Chapel Hill and Durham areas. Also, if we were to live in Durham or Chapel Hill and send our child to private school, would we qualify for an reduction to the school tax portion of the property tax?

I didn't think NC had a homestead exemption at all (at least not compared to the one I had in MN when I lived there). But I did a little research, and there is a homestead exemption IF you are over 65 (or disabled) and your income is less than $20,500.
Exemptions and Exclusions

I'm not aware of any tax credits for attending private school.

This will happen right after people who don't have kids don't have to pay school tax.. which will be.. never!
