Our neighbor is training her newer little member of the family, a pug, with the invisible fence around her yard. Poor little guy has been zapped a few times, but the thing that surprises me most is that she says since he has been zapped a time or two, he won't even go out in the yard, and the whole scenario has set back house-training back to almost Step One. Is that common?
We went with a fence. Our Jack Russell would not be contained, I am sure -- just one of those breeds. Even a fence didn't contain him when he was young, but we lived on acres of land at the time, so it was okay for him to run about the property.
The Weimaraner, by contrast, is so obedient. The fence is only about three and a half feet tall, and he stays in the backyard just fine. The only thing keeping the JRT in these days is his age. At 17, he isn't doing much jumping, poor thing.
When walking my dog past invisible fences I've noticed that most of the dogs come charging to the edge of the yard, barking really viciously. A lot of them are normally pretty laid-back breeds -- labs, mostly. I'm starting to wonder if being in the invisible fenced-in yard makes them more territorial? A few have charged through the fence and my puppy and I run for our lives!
We've been considering getting one, but our dog is still young, large and goofy, and I don't know if an invisible fence would stop her. Gotta finish dog training first. Right now she wants to do what she wants to do.
I thought about you yesterday when I drove home -- saw someone in our neighborhood walking a big ole' basset hound!
FYI, we have the "wireless" electric fence. Amcjap, since we are in the same neighborhood, stop by this weekend (or next time you are around) if you would like to see it in action. There is no installation. The drawback is that the radius is circular -- adjustable, but circular.
Also, dogs that run right through the fence, I wonder if the owners can re-set the sensitivity of the collar? Our dogs' collars have adjustable sensitivity levels. When our Border Collie mix walked right through the "fence," we turned the adjustment up -- made a HUGE difference, much to puppy dog's chagrin!

I met the lady with the tubby red and white and he looks just like my Warren. Can't wait to bring him and Otis down to meet all the new friends in the neighborhood.

Lots seem to be selling there, so that's good. Met three new families at the Centex dinner last week. They are currently building on Lyons Farm and very excited.
My Border Collies likes chase, and usually catch stray cats. After getting the Electric fence a neighbors cat that my dog had caught in the past, learned the boundary. I have a video of the cat laying down on the property line with one of my dogs drooling 6 feet away.
