Inconveniently for you, the republican controlled general assembly redrew the district in 2011 with the same essential shape, as noted in the link you posted, lol.
Practically, there's a big difference between a district that leans 80-20 and a district that leans 65-35 (effectively giving the majority a better chance in adjacent districts). As long as the majority is clear, USDOJ doesn't care about the details. Don't kid yourself. Sure, the districts look similar from 50,000 feet but you can't see precinct granularity and at the precinct level, there was a lot of swapping.

From the git-go, you’ve got nudity, fratricide, onanism (look that one up!), prostitution, incest, a frontal assault of family values and accusations of rape. And that’s just in the first book of the Bible. And it goes downhill from there. By the time you get to Ezekiel, you even find bestiality!”

Relevant to the subject of this thread, democracy in this country dies most readily when our electorate becomes unworthy of it. Roughly two thirds of both our major political parties believe democracy to be imperiled. With each blaming the other for its demise. Unless and until we stop affording our politicians the unwavering loyalty and reverance generally reserved for wrestling stars, we'll be stuck in the same rut of divisiveness and acrimony currently poisoning our system of democracy. And please feel free to confirm my suspicion by insisting that it really IS the other guys.

In the words of David Frum, one of George W. Bush’s speechwriters, "If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy."

I had hoped it would take longer.

This. Conservatives accuse Dems of voter fraud as a smokescreen for their own vote suppression tactics, which are a proud tradition for them going all the way back to Reconstruction. When you mess with those Southern boys and their "traditions", they'll pull out all stops to defend themselves. Like their historical rattlesnake flag says, "Don't tread on me", or serious repercussions will result. This is what we're dealing with.
