I recommend that you check out Moving: How to avoid Moving Company Scams for reviews/ratings of movers, as well as information on the really scary scams that are out there.

We are moving from Boston too!
Hello,
We are also moving from Boston- our movers are coming on June 26.
We have a 1000 sq ft condo and to move and for a full pack we are paying $4750. If you pack yourself subtract $800. That amount also covers a small shuttle to get down our small boston street ($500) and parking permits to reserve the curb ($150).
We got numerous quotes and they ranged from $4000- $6500. We did not go with the lowest quote because I couldn't find any recommendations for those movers on any websites such as citysearch. We narrowed it down to Edwards and HMS movers. We ended up going with HMS movers who work through National Van lines. They only had 6 reviews on citysearch (at least its something) but they were $500 cheaper than Edwards. Our friends who moved today went with Edwards.
I hope this helps.

We used Siracusa Moving who works through Allied when we moved from MA to NC last year. We are happy with their service, nothing was broken/lost. They also did our packing and unpacking. I have no idea how much it cost since we were a corporate relocation.

We just moved in April - from Providence to Cary. We used the POD system and it was great. All you would need is one POD (16x8x8). The POD was delivered to our home a couple of days prior to the move. We packed ourselves and believe me, it was chock full, top to bottom, front to back. They ship the POD to Raleigh - they have a franchise near the airport. It can go directly to your new place and be stored for you. We rented a furnished apt for a few weeks and they stored the POD for somewhere around $195/mo. You can have access to the POD at anytime, just call a day ahead. Our cost for the POD and shipping was about $1700. Quite a difference from the $5000 it would have cost to have movers AND your stuff is the only stuff in your POD.

Whatever you do you should make sure the mover you choose is licensed and insured and is also a member of the Better Business Bureau. If they are a member of the BBB you should look them up and make sure they have a satisfactory record. There are too many choices out there to be messing around with people with bad records. Also, most of the moving companies have automated quote forms so you can receive a quote from a mover for free. You should get as many quotes as possible. I've learned the hard way never to take the lowest quote! If it's too good to be true, it probably is! Good luck! oh, in case you're wondering I've had a lot of experience with movers. I've moved around the Boston area and up the east coast a few times. PM me and I will send you more details about my good and bad experiences with Boston Movers. Thanks.
