I am taking a job that is relocating me to Raleigh. I have to live in the Raleigh/Durham area they say and one of my largest accounts is Wake Med but I will mostly work out of my house.
I want to be in an area that I can walk to restaurants, parks and shops but is small and quaint. I currently live in Vinings/Smyrna, GA and can walk to 6-7 local restaurants/bars, ice cream shops, wine store, grocery, park and it's safe. I would like this same atmosphere if possible. Are there any areas that have recently been renovated where young starting families are either moving into older houses and renovating or new developments are mixing with old? and still have this small town charm I'm looking for? I also have a child on the way due in November. I want an area with young families walking their kids but also a few bars close by.
That's not too much to ask is it??? Oh and I will be renting a house at first.
Yeah, do not want an apartment. I don't mind a townhouse community but not an apartment or apartment style condo. Thanks though. I like something with character.
Chapel Hill sounds like a match to me. Look at Meadowmont near there as well, if you want something newer. I'm originally from Atlanta. You might find the triangle a little too quiet at first. I grows on you. You'll love the lack of traffic.

Cameron Village has tons of townhouses, but they are OLD and "character" is not how I would describe them. Brick mid-century rectangular boxes is more like it. Otherwise, it's a wonderful area, though, for what you say you're looking for.
Cameron Village/Cameron Park/Glenwood Brooklyn would give you what you seek. But, these areas come with a price premium as they are highly sought after. The same is going to be true for Chapel Hill.
If costs are going to be an issue, you can check out the quaint downtowns of Apex and Cary but those areas aren't going to give you the bars/nightlife found in the former recommendations.

Thanks so much!!!
Also try Apex. It has a good mix of old and new and is more quaint than most. It has what you are looking for and is about as safe as you can get. Price point is also better than CH.
