Default Which Raleigh neighborhood?

Ok so Im thinking about relocating to Raleigh. From what I can gather it is divided up into West, North, Old, and East, all having their own neighborhoods. I would like to live in an urban type environment where it is easy to walk to places such as stores, markets. Im thinking about buying or renting a townhouse, schools are important as well because my son will be starting kindergarten in a couple years. Which part of Raleigh might I want to look into? I will offer more info on my living preferences if needed. Thanks for your time and suggestions.

For what you describe, I would focus on the area around Cameron Village. It isn't really "urban", but is close enough to walk to downtown. The true urban area is fairly small and is not well served by grocery stores and the like.

Well, those aren't really set in stone, except "North Raleigh" which is definitely defined as North of the Beltline (440). "East" and "west" would be more just general directional terms.

I concur that the Cameron Village/Cameron Park area is a wonderful part of town--very charming, walking distance to a LOT of cool things, etc--but also is pretty expensive. There are quite a few townhouses near there but they are very old and VERY plain (brick rectangles); however, it might be a good start to learn the area and it would be the most reasonably-priced places in that neat part of town.
