I am staying in Cary, NC in August. I need some advice as to where to go, are there any festivals , how is the area, is it safe to drive at nite, I mean I just need as much info as possible?
Another thing, my parents are looking to move to NC. Any ideas what is the best place for retirees to go to?
Do you know what dates you'll be here. There are quite a few concerts in August that I've noticed. You might check the schedules at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary, Walnut Creek in Raleigh, and the Raleigh Downtown Live concerts.
Cary has the Lazy Daze festival on August 23rd in the old downtown part. (it may or may not be your thing).
Driving at night in Cary is quite safe. About the only thing to mention is watch out for deer and that some areas may not be well lit. But you are extremely, extremely unlikely to get carjacked. Driving into Raleigh or Durham to go out at night, just make sure you know where you are going and how to get there and you'll be fine.
Acevaz, I recommend buying or renting a GPS unit for your car. I am here visiting this week right now and my Dad gave me a GPS and it is a lifesaver. I feel very safe here. I get in the car lock my doors and tell my GPS where to take me and it really helps me feel confident to go drive around. The town where I live has only 15000 people, so this is a big difference for me and I think I'd be lost without the GPS!
Have fun! I'm having a really awesome time. It's beautiful and the people are sooo friendly.
Good luck. You are part of a select group to have vacationed in Cary. I would rather watch paint dry than to spend one night in Cayree. It used to be a great little southern town. Now it is neither a town nor southern.
Your GPS is your friend! Bring one if possible. My GPS has saved me more times than I can count since I moved here. Gotta love technology! Just be sure to lock it up out of view whenever you leave your vehicle (that includes the cords). They've become a particular favorite of car burglers lately so it's important to remove all evidence that you have a GPS.
I agree that the Triangle area is not exactly a vacation destination, but since your parents are thinking of moving here, I think it could be a productive trip. If nothing else, the closest beach is just an hour & a half away (just go straight down I-40 to Wilmington & Wrightsville Beach) so that's a nice option.
Someone earlier mentioned the Koka Booth ampitheater in Cary. Here's a link to the website. Koka Booth Amphitheatre at Regency Park, An SMG Managed Venue
Wilco will be performing there the day you arrive. The next day there's a Beer, Bourbon, & BBQ festival. How can that NOT be fun?!
To find out about other events in Cary and the other towns of the Triangle, you should check out the events calendar on The Indy's website. Independent Weekly: Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill
Unfortunately, it won't allow you to search for events in August just yet. Check back in July.
I think it might be a little too soon to know what all will be happening in Cary & the surrounding area in August. I'm sure there will be far more info to be found a week or two before your arrival.

Different strokes. I used to vacation here a few times a year. Then I finally just moved.
When I first read the thread title, I was thinking "staying" meant it was a "Stay-cation" (aka, a Holi-stay), not someone actually coming to Cary for his vacation. But there are enough things to do in the area to stay busy.
