My partner and I currently live in Montclair, New Jersey. A very comfortable town for gay & lesbian couples (many with children). We're considering a move to Chapel Hill and wondering if the town is as liberal/welcoming as we've heard. Specifically, which neighborhoods in Chapel Hill are the most welcoming? Thanks a lot!
Pretty much the whole city, really. Closer to downtown the better, obviously, but other than that, there's not much else to say.
Also look into their neighboring town, Carrboro, as they are alike in this matter---plus one can easily cross the border between the two several times without even knowing it.
I'm planning a move to the area at some point later this year. My sister lives in Chapel Hill, and I've been to visit several times. I feel very comfortable there, especially in Carrboro (and yes, I'm a lesbian). Apparently, the mayor of Carrboro is an openly gay man. I seem to remember, on my first trip to the Weaver Street market, standing amidst the crowd on a particularly lovely day and thinking "my people!" lol. Probably more hippies and students there than gays and lesbians, but the barometer that measures my comfort zone in that regard doesn't really distinguish (if that makes any sense). Good luck!
Apparently, the mayor of Carrboro is an openly gay man.
Actually, the new current one (Mark Chilton) is not.
You're probably thinking of Mike Nelson, who was mayor from 1996-2006...a total of five terms.
He is just now serving his first term as an Orange County Commissioner (the county that Chapel Hill & Carrboro are in).
Similarly, Chapel Hill does currently have an openly gay city councilman (their second one in fact...the first served in the 80s). If I recall, he's on his second term.
I have an acquantance who is a lesbian. She rented a house in Carrboro and then bought a house in Durham. (Homes are much cheaper in Durham than in Carrboro and Chapel Hill.) All three communities have significant gay/lesbian communities.
We'll be going to CH & Carrboro in June looking for homes...are there neighborhood names that I should acquaint myself with that are close to the center of either town?
Looking for a gay friendly neighborhood.
Just find a house you like that fits your budget. Both towns are gay-friendly, and there aren't really any "gayborhoods." Nobody will even blink wherever you choose to live. If you describe the kind of neighborhood you like, people can suggest some places to look.
