We are in the process of moving to Raleigh for job relocation. We have two little boys and are focusing in on the Northern part of Raleigh for a home purchase - 27613 zip code area or nearby. My husband will be working in Raleigh. I am still looking for employment but am focusing on work in Durham or Chapel Hill, as I'm in the health care field and looking to work in pediatrics of some sort.
So, honestly, what kind of commute would I be facing going from Northwest Raleigh to Durham or even Chapel Hill?
Durham wouldn't be too bad. Depending on where you live (the 27613 zipcode covers a wide swath of area), your commute could be in the 25-30 minute range. Depending on where you live and your commute path, you can avoid the majority of rush hour traffic.
Chapel Hill is a different story. RTP lies directly between you and Chapel Hill, and that means a reasonable amount of traffic if you need to commute anytime near rush hour. I'm figuring about 30 minutes without traffic, 40-45 minutes during rush hour.
We live in NW Raleigh very close to Glenwood ave, My hubby works in Durham on Rt.15 or is it called highway 15 anyway it takes him between 20-25 minutes.
For an easier commute on both, why not look more in the Brier Creek area, or some of the new neighborhoods in East Durham right near the county line? What price range are you in, and what's important to you in a home/area/neighborhood?
I used to do this commute about 3 years ago. It is manageable and took about 25 minutes in the morning and about 40 minutes home in the evening. The time is variable depending on the backup on 540 to get onto 40 west in the morning and traffic during the evening rush hour. It got really bad when they were working on widening 40 but in general is better now.
