Hello,

My family moved to Cary less than two months ago, and I just unexpectedly found out I am pregnant with my third child. (My second is only eight months old-yikes!!!)

I read the previous threads on hospitals/OBs, but I was hoping I could possibly get some more specific information:

I am interested in a hospital/birthing center that is pro-breastfeeding, that routinely provides lactation consults, that promotes rooming together with your newborn, and that overall has a great reputation. It would also be a plus if there was good NICU care at the hospital or nearby, just in case it is needed.

In terms of OB practices: I would like one that has a relatively low rate of C-sections and malpractice lawsuits against them, that will allow for a VBAC (especially since I've already had one), that routinely does 4D ultrasounds in their OWN offices, and in general have a great bedside manner and really care about their clients and their birthing preferences.

I am one that really does like to be an active participant in my prenancy care and I appreciate doctors that are willing to listen to my preferences and concerns and not just expect me to do whatever they say because "they are the doctor and I am the patient."

I would really appreciate your feedback...

Teresa

OB doctors can only deliver at certain hospitals, so at some point you'll have to decide which you'll pursue further - the doctor or the birthing center.

With regards to the birthing center you described, I think you'll find most major hospitals in this area fit the bill. I really wouldn't worry about that part too much, unless you're into water births or other such that might not be available at all places. I used Duke for both babies and never regretted it, especially since we ended up using the NICU and emergency birth services - they saved my second son's life without a doubt.

Best wishes! It sounds like you'll have your hands full!

There is no office that does routine 4D sonograms. They may offer one with a charge to the patient, but they are not reimbursable by any insurance company unless there is a suspected anomaly. If that is the case, you would be referred to a materal-fetal medicine specialist who may perform a 3D sonogram for diagnosis. hth, for that question anyway.

I had both of my babies when I lived in cary. We went to western wake, which I think is now called Wake Med Cary (on tryon road) and by the time I had my second child they then had a level 2 NICU (maybe higher, I cannot remember). They (as do all of the other birthing hospitals in the area) have birthing rooms with tubs, large rooms, and the baby stays with you at all times, only leaves to do the hearing test, but you can go with them for that.

The OB practice I used was Triangle OB Gyn, and they are associated with the North Carolina Center for Reproductive Medicine, so they are accustomed to high risk pregnancies, which made me comfortable in case I was in that situation. They have two midwives (or three) on staff, and they were very good. I ended up meeting all of the docs, and while some were more on the quiet side, they were all very very good. For my first child I had a 32 hour labor, that was back labor, and it was tough. I had no idea what to expect as it was my first child and my doc was very patient, made me feel really good about "how I was doing" and let me progress at my own rate. Anyhow, he was one of the docs that I thought was quiet during my visits, but it proved to be a great calming quality while in labor! He was not the doc on duty when I had my second, but he heard I had delivered and just stopped by to see how I was.

The office is located on tryon road, just down the road from the hospital.

Hope this helps

Leigh

I second Triangle Ob/GYN. The "quiet" doc is Dr. V. Love him! He is very go with the flow.

I delivered at Western Wake/WakeMed Cary and I had a very positive experience. They were very respectful of my birth plan. My son slept in my room with me up until we were discharged, as did my husband. I used the jet tub during my labor and it was very helpful.

ETA that two of my friends have had successful V-Bacs with Triangle Ob/Gyn. One with her second and one with her third. They both used the same midwife, Kim.

Yes, Dr. V! How great is he? I would agree with everything you said, completely laid back and very much listens to the women giving birth. Kim was not at the practice when I was there, just Jill and stephanie. I have heard great things about Kim though.

It is surprising to hear this... Where I came from in Florida there were several offices that did routine 4D sonograms. I had at least two with each of my children AND it was covered by insurance.

In NC, 3D is not reimbursable as a 'routine' practice. If an office chooses to do 3D/4D imaging, they 'eat' the cost which is time and whatever media is used to give you images, which may be what your FL office chose to do. I've not worked in FL so I can't say for sure, but that's the way it's done here.

Default 4D and Triangle OB

I got a 4D at Triangle OB just a couple of months ago. I was having the standard ultrasound, and the technician asked me if she could try out her 4D -- don't know if this is becoming standard practice there.
I've been to the Wake Med Cary website to check out their birthing center, and it looks in line with what you desire.

Duke OB/GYN at Duke Hospital do 4D for sure, not sure whether that is routine though. Also, Duke have a top-rate NICU so if that is a priority you may want to consider an OB that would deliver at Duke Hospital.
