Warning: Reading this article about wasteful spending may cause a rise in blood pressure!
All I can say is wow.
I hope saturnfan is sitting down if/when he reads this. His head might very well explode!
My favorite quote:
"...Solid Waste Management Director James S. Reynolds, approved the trips and purchases, which included top-of-the line backpacking gear, a John Denver CD and a novel about elves."

And some folks wonder why other folks are reluctant to forfeit more of their earnings to government.
This story will only raise blood pressure of those who are surprised by it.

You would not even begin to comprehend the lavish state funded travel given to upper state burroughcraps in almost every state. It's BS. We are getting as corrupt as the Mexcian government in this country. The only reason Mexico is so damn poor and cannot support its working people is corruption. I will not stand for it in this country. This sht needs to be exposed, over and over until the American people have had enough! These idiots think they are appointed Gods once they get a few votes and are elected.

The ultimate in recycling: "Reynolds was demoted last month, county records show, but will remain on the payroll earning $94,973 annually."
Must not follow the ole adage: 'When in doubt throw it out' rule!
Sad, sad story on the state of the state, from local school bus maintenance rip offs to now, recycle this! NC is rapidly becoming NY!

Yeah, I guess I'm not surprised about the wasteful spending as much as I am about how blatant it was and how the guy actually tried to defend himself. I am actually looking for a new job in the environmental field as we speak and I believe I have already come across the posting for this guys vacated position.
I think I'll pass on applying for that one. I don't want to be associated with that department in any shape or form. I can only imagine the atmosphere in that office today. I bet they wish this story came out on a friday instead!

NRG,
Set your sights higher.
You don't want that crummy job. It took him many months and a cast of several to come up $10,000 short of "His Easleyness's" (Thank you, Barry Saunders) tab for a junket to Italy.

WHY do these county employees have credit cards they can use, it seems, indiscriminately? I taught for the State for 26 years, and any trip I took, conference I attended, airline flight I booked, or material(s) purchased for classroom use, I bought outright, and then was reimbursed by the district for whom I taught. Because it was my money I was spending, and I had to justify the purchase(s), running a risk of not getting reimbursed, you can bet I wasn't buying things like expensive parkas, GPS navigational systems, and for crying out loud, CDs.
Man, but I wish I could be reimbursed for everything I ever spent in my classroom.
And then, to add insult to injury, this bureaucrat is demoted, and still draws a $95K salary? He hardly seems capable of managing any kind of waste.

Hi, Teach.

Like I learned AFTER school:
"It ain't WHAT you know....."
(And, thank you for your service to our country.)

You were right, Mr. Jake-wish, in that this got a rise in my BP. Fortunately, mine is sooooo low until I can afford it -- it's the pounding in my chest that gets scary.
I suppose upper management gets a credit card as they are more trustworthy? I have failed to ever hear anything except the opposite. As to "his Easleyness's" trip to Italy, I want to hear about the Italian business that $170,000 trip brings to NC.
Sheesh, but I thought a cruise around the Greek Isles was expensive, or an African safari. I could have gone annually for years on end.
Thanks for the regards, Mike. I enjoyed teaching quite a bit. Retired now, I really miss it, believe it or not. The HS kids kept me young.
