Well, feel free to write your State House and State Senate representatives, and the governor, and let them know how you feel about all this. They need to know that
A) NC should AT LEAST get rid of that silly law that prohibits cities & counties from enacting their own smoking bans in restaurants. The state has no business telling local governments whether they can do this or not.
and
B) If possible, a state-wide ban would be great.
(B) is probably not gonna happen anytime soon if ever. But (A) is pretty dang reasonable I think! Let the cities and counties enact these where the popular opinion supports it (like most of the Triangle cities).
I agree with you somewhat and I hate it when people smoke around me; however, if popular opinion supports non-smoking then I believe that most places would be smoke free. I've lived here a little over 2 years and I have seen things get better. I actually believe that popular opinion has swung things in favor of the non-smoker. I do NOT believe the government should be passing laws telling private business owners that smoking is illegal in their businesses. If you as a consumer do not want to go to a smoking establishment, then there are many choices out there for you. I believe we will get to a point very soon, where almost all eating establishments will be smoke free, but I do not believe that it is the governments decission to decide that performing a legal activity should be illegal in private businesses. I think if do that we border on socialism, and that is something I want to stay far away from.
NC actually has a law on the books that says a city or county cannot enact a smoking ban on bars or restaurants. Therefore, the ones that are smoke-free are that way by choice only.
Fortunately, some recognize the Triangle population as cosmopolitan and progressive enough to want and desire smokefree places.
Smokefree restaurants are not unusual at all here. Smokefree bars, well, are a good deal more rare but I've found a couple believe it or not.
Hopefully, things will continue to move in the right direction over time.
If you can give some bars that are non smoking let me know, because I have only found one or two
my hope is that some day laws will prohibit smoking anywhere a non-smoker may smell it. Especially around little kids, who can't protect themselves from it. I hurl when I see parents or caregivers at playgrounds smoking. (because of the reaction is causes in me and the disgust and disdain I feel for their habit, particularly around the impressionable.)
Smoking is still very real here, and though waning, you can't escape it easily.
Plenty of Non-Smoking places in the Triangle and they are growing. Mosaic off Glenwood is non-smoking. Fox and Hound at North Hills does a great job of keeping smoking and non-smoking section separate.
I think NC is a prime example of people choosing to quit smoking and having the businesses follow the trend. I am very much of the opinion that people should let businesses know that they would like to see them go non-smoking instead of the telling the government. Smoking is a personal decision that no government should have a say in. I am a former smoker, I knew it is stupid to smoke, smokers know it is stupid to smoke, but they do it because they have the right to smoke. Drinking can harm you just as much as smoking, yet no one seems to think prohibition was a good idea.
I would love to know how it is still legal at all - come on people, you have to LEGALLY wear a seatbelt, because people die when their cars wreck and people are thrown from them. Drugs are pulled from the market if a person dies, if lead is found in paint in Chinese toys, the product is recalled and it is national news (as it should be!) ...
CIGARETTES KILL PEOPLE. It's as simple as that. Maybe not as quickly as being thrown from a car or having an aneurism or brain damage from lead ... but they KILL people. How is it even possible that they aren't totally outlawed? How much tobacco money is still rolling in Washington ?
