There are lots of nice state parks within a few hours' drive. I went to Goose Creek State Park last Friday. It's on the banks of the Pamlico River, on the coastal plain, so the scenery was way different than what you'd get at Umstead or any other local park, and it was pretty cool. We hiked around a few hours on the sandy trails, then went on the palmetto "boardwalk", which is a boardwalk through a swamp/marsh area. On the way home, we stopped in Washington, NC for dinner. They were having some kind of festival that night (I'm not sure how often they do it, but it's always on Fridays) so most of the shops on Main Street were still open, and there were musicians about every half block on the street. We left the house around noon and got home exhausted around 9.
I think day trips are a lot more fun when you're not sure where you're going or what you're going to do when you get there.
Reed gold mine site in Cabarrus county where the first gold in the US was discovered around 1849. Tryon Palace in New Bern. Chimney Rock State Park. Tour the Capital Building. Float down the Neuse. Oriental is a great day trip.
