I'm curious which route you use during rush hour.

It seems there are several to choose from and I'm wondering which ones have the least traffic and move the fastest. I hear Capital is a nightmare.

Does the new 98 bypass make the trek easier at all? Or shorter time-wise?

I'm wondering if taking 98 to Creedmoor and then going down to connect with 540 makes a good route.

Or does going down 401 or Forestville Road (to 401) and then merging onto I-540 work better?

The Six Forks / Hwy 98 junction just plain sucks. They should put ramps in like the Hwy 50 / 98 junction has. That one intersection lengthens my commute in the morning by 15-20 minutes, I absolutely hate it.

I avoid the rush hour at all cost. Adjusted my schedule to come in and leave before the rush. I did the 98 route and found it to be better than 540 during rush hour. Downside is most of the route is one lane either direction so one accident or a truck that lost a couch or washing machine off the back going to the recycle center could hold you up. I did the track for almost 2 years and only had complete stoppage on 98 2 times. Now during non rush hours I use Falls of Neuse to Rt 540 to Rt 70 to Alexander and can be in RTP in 25 minutes. Rt 98 non rush hour was about 30 to 35 minutes. Hope this helps!

I'll tell you about a route my aunt told me she takes from Youngsville (about 10 min. away from WF) to the area between Hwy 50/540 that takes her 20 min. (and from there to RTP would take 15-20 min). I haven't gone this route myself but plan on taking it when we move to our new house in WF soon). From Capital, take Purnell Rd to New Light Rd to Ghoston Rd. This takes you to 98 right at the Hwy 50 intersection. Take Hwy 50 to 540. Like I said I haven't been this way myself but she goes this way during rush hour I think and said she doesn't hit much traffic. I sure hope it will work for me.

I drive this route daily (live on Purnell), it's better than 98 from US 1 to RTP because it bypasses Six Forks intersection (see above post), but it's biggest problem is that the intersection of Ghoston and 98 has no stop light, so if one or two people are trying to turn left on 98 towards Wake Forest, you're screwed unless you go four-wheeling around them. Once you do get to the stop stop and it's your turn, you're trying to pull out into traffic that has been tightly packed by the stoplight at Six Forks mentioned above, and traffic backs up 20 cars deep on Ghoston at prime time.
