All the research I've done online tells me the Raleigh area is a great place to live! We are considering relocating to Wake County from Northern New Jersey.
To get connected with people, I'd like to see if I can find some of what I'm familiar with. What can you tell me about quilt guilds, doll clubs, fabric stores and things along those lines?
Also UCC churches and handbell choirs (yes I know about the Raleigh Ringers!)
The hubby is a UNIX geek.
If we come down for an exploratory visit what are the must-see places?
There is is apparently a great fabric store in Carroboro- I have not been there yet. There is a fabric store store on Capitol in Raleigh - Mill Outlet Village, & they had some stuff posted but I have not had too much time to deveote to that hobby. I am a doll collector too (Dawn) but I consider it more of an online hobby I buy, sell, & do custom fashions online- never joined a club in NY & didn't know if one even existed!
Hancock Fabrics has a big store on Wake Forest Road, just south of the I-440 intersection.
There's a store called Great Yarns (or something like that) at Ridgewood Shopping Center on Wade Ave. They're big among avid knitters around here, so I'm told.
There are several UCC's around Raleigh and the whole Triangle. In Raleigh, the big main one that I know of is Community UCC at the Wade Ave/Dixie Trail intersection.
Must-see places? Lots downtown...Imax theatre, Governor's mansion, State Capital Bldg, State History Museum and State Science Museum. Also the historic district in Oakwood. West of downtown you've got the NCSU campus, the Fairgrounds flea market, Pullen city park, the state Farmer's market, and the State Art museum.
The Mill Outlet Village on Capitol is great. My daughter comes all the way from Chapel Hill to get her fabric there. She sews alot, I don't and she said it was awesome.
NC was historically one of the busiest places for texile and apparel manufacturing in the US. I took an upholstery class through the Wake county parks and rec dept back in the early 1980's. Our teacher was excellent. He was a professional upholsterer and the students brought in all kinds projects including sofas to reupholster. I bought my fabric and foam at Mill Outlet Village and made cushions for a home made sofa. Mill Outlet Village was great. I'm glad that it is still in business.
