I don't recall ever hearing that announcement at my local Harris Teeter (in southern Durham at Fayetteville & Hwy 54), so this weekend when I was shopping I made a point of paying close attention. I didn't hear a peep during the half hour I was in the store. Does anyone know how often the announcement is made? Maybe when our new, bigger HT opens in a few months I'll finally get a chance to hear this mysterious announcement!
Hubby and I stopped at Harris Teeter yesterday after church, and I was listening too... Heard some 80's music over the intercom, but that was it.

I make a decision to put them before my impatience and greet them nicely and even make nice small talk if there is time . Then I feel better and I hope I have brightened their day.
You're assuming that saying 'no' to them is somehow rude. I'm never mean to them, I don't insult them. It's a voluntary process. If my saying no is somehow the soul crushing experience you describe, they really need a different job. Tell you what, next time I say no I'll say 'No thanks, but you're a lovely person.'

I know you don't know me from Adam, and all I can do is ask that you trust me when I say that I'm really a nice guy. I'm a family man. But I'm also a man of conviction and I've made up my mind on this.

If the policy bothers you talk to the manager, don't take it out on the checkers.
You think the store manager made the policy then, or maybe it came from 'corporate'? In other words, the manager has no more power to change the policy then the receipt checker - so that's the point? Besides - what if the manager just left an abusive man and moved here with 3 small kids?

And as I said, I don't 'take it out' on anyone. I politely refuse.

If my alternative is to shop at Food Lion, I would rather submit to a full body cavity search at HT.

Kelly, how nice and considerate of you.

I agree that if you don't like something about the way the store does business, talk to the manager. It may not be his decision, but he's in a position to pass the comments on to Corporate. If he gets enough of them, he'll do just that.

You think Corporate cares? What percentage of people you think refuse the receipt check? Maybe 2? They're counting on your complacency. Even me - it's so low on my annoy-o-meter that if I like other things about the store and I'm not hassled when I refuse, why bother?

But someday they'll forget to train an employee that the process is voluntary, and in their zeal to catch a shoplifter that employee is going to grab the wrong person. Maybe a jumpy person with a knife. Then maybe we'll get a lawsuit that will finally put an end to this practice once and for all.

Looks like a few posts got dropped from the discussion somehow...

In any event, can we either close this discussion or go back to the original topic? All this other back and forth... enough said already!

The manager gets paid to listen to respectful complaints...
at least that is the way I see it. Also the manager is the one most likely to let the "corporate" people know what the customers are unhappy about.
Personally , I suspect it is just a fun game for you... have you ever
called the corporate office to complain???

If you don't see any purpose in refusing to consent to a completely baseless search of your property, I just feel sort of sorry for you. It's one thing to think it over, decide the intrusion and hassle might be annoying, but there's some benefit because hey, it keeps costs down, and maybe that cashier DID overcharge me for these shears - but no, not you. You think Best Buy can make "rules" and anyone who doesn't follow Best Buy's rules does it to annoy people.

I waste no time standing in receipt lines, and I follow the rules. I'm sorry it annoys you.
Your property is toilet paper that you bought 2 mins ago in their store. ok.........
