Went to the Tiger Direct there Saturday evening. Not only did I survive, I wasn't even mugged. Strange but true.
The carousel is nice. My daughter prefers the train though.
eh. My wife did a rotation at a non profit that was in the mall and their workers had a history of issues when leaving after dark. They all were required to have a cop escort them to their car. She has also worked in downtown Durham at various places and been very comfortable.
As with every Durham thread people have to take extremes. If someone makes a stupid comment about all of Durham being terrible then someone has to come back and try and sugarcoat a place that really isn't very nice.
I live near Northgate and I go there pretty frequently - a couple times a month - but I don't like it. Not that I feel unsafe or anything but the layout is annoying, it's hard to drive around and there aren't many good stores there. I like browsing through the Gamestop and TigerDirect is awesome but other than that and the carousel and fountains (thanks to whomever mentioned them in my rant thread!), there's not much worth going for.
I've not noticed a Banana Republic at Northgate (or Pullen Park LOL), although the old South Square had one.
You know something else I like about Northgate is all the small or locally owned businesses... like that little Western Clothing Shop, or the boot place next door, the hobby/toy shop, or the small jewelry shops... and the local service businesses. Northgate itself is locally owned, and I like that they support other local businesses. They have the big stuff, too, like Macy's and Victoria's Secret, but it's the little ones that give it character.
I've been going to Northgate for 25 years. It's such a special place to me.
(I agree driving around the mall is not entirely convenient with all the new parking decks. I typically go in near the Sears entrance b/c I find it easier to get in and park there.)
Oh ya? Last time I was in *DURHAM* a bunny rabbit came out of the tall grass next to the sidewalk and scared the crap out of me. I am not sure, but I think he was packin'. I swore I would never, ever walk on the sidewalk again.
Last time I was in Raleigh a king cobra convinced me to walk near a trap spider, which was under the control of an HOA and I spilled my delicious cookout milkshake all over myself which resulted in total chaos as all of the peace officers were in Durham that day trying to save us all from the unruly graduate medical students of that Duke gang.

^^Wow this thread just got really stupid...really fast...
