Is it a safe area? I know some areas are a little bit sketchy... I am willing to go more suburban if it is a safer area. Tired of urban living!

What do you mean by urban? If you're equating urban to downtown Manhattan, I doubt you'll find any of that in the areas that were suggested. Lots of greenery and scenery. I think I'm familiar with the area you were talking about. I believe it's in between Garrett an MLK. I don't know the name, but it seems okay there. In general, all the areas mentioned are good areas. Always check the city of Durham crime mapper if you have concerns.

Geesh, why would I recommend an area to you that is unsafe? If you only knew, you would laugh at your own question. While anything can happen anywhere (just ask the residents of Lochmere in Cary!), HVF and the surrounding neighborhoods are very safe. It's pleasant, convenient suburban living. I would live there in a minute and would let my children play in the yard and park my cars outside the garage, and wait, ...I already do all that! Come see for yourself. I hope the sky is Carolina blue that day - it shows off a neighborhood so well.

The Burch Avenue neighborhood has a lot of families and can probably fit as a good place for you to live. A lot of the homes are for rent, but I've seen some For Sale signs around here. It's literally three blocks from East Campus and a mile from West.

We just moved very near the Pickett Park townhomes that were recommended, and we're very happy. Good neighborhood, lots of people out walking, friendly neighbors, but close to lots of good restaurants, etc. It's a very short commute to Duke (6-7 minutes) -- of course, parking once you're there is a WHOLE 'nother issue!

If you want to be really close to Duke, you might check out Forest Oaks, a community of townhomes. It's less than 2 miles from Duke off Morreene Rd. Area is fine and your husband will love his very short commute. It's very convenient to all the major roads in the area and is centrally located for easy access to everything. They are a bit older, having been built around 1988, but we saw 2 when we were looking for homes (ended up in a detached house instead) and saw some nicely updated ones. Prices are probably $130 to $140K. Lots of Duke Med folks there.

Well, Mebane is not a bad commute, less than 20 min., a friendly little town and has at least two really good restaurants, one Mexican one Italian. About a third of Mebane is in Orange County. A relaxed atmosphere, street festivals in the warm months (thats about 10 out of 12), just givin' yall another option.

Thanks everyone! This is great. I am starting to really get a feel for how things will be. Can't wait for my move - we are moving in early 2009, so I am starting my search early.
