Could someone help this city girl identify a little critter that found its way into my kitchen today ? It was about 1/2 inch long, a dark brown/black color. He could jump straight up about 12" off the floor and he clicked quite loudly(so loud that I was in the living room and I thought that water was dropping on the kitchen floor ) each time he jumped. Poor little thing has gone to meet his maker now but I would love to know what it was as I have never seen or heard anything quite like it..(It was not a cricket but as loud as one)
Thank you

Are you sure it's not a mole cricket? There are more breeds of crickets here than anywhere else I've ever lived. And they're LOUD too.

Hey, I have those things too. I was like you and was sitting at my desk in the kitchen when I heard this weird popping noise. I saw it jumping up in the corner. Once I was sweeping up what I thought was a dead bug and as I leaned over with the dust pan, the sucker almost hit me in the eye. I'm just as curious as you about what these things are.

It sounds like you have (or had) a click beetle (family Elateridae). They're harmless (they eat pollen and aphids), but if you have kids, they're kinda' fun to play with. When they end up on their backs, they arch their bodies, then *snap* themselves up into the air to right themselves. Most of the ones I've got around here are dull brown, but there are some (the "eyed elator") that are a light gray with what looks like two eyes painted to their backs.

Is this your bug?

Oh please don't let me find one of those in my house... please!

By the way, I was at Whole Foods and brought home a huge gross cockroach in my paper bags. The thing scurried in one direction, me in the other. I called the Clegg's guy since we have a contract with them. The operator thought I was crazy, but my guy came right out and took care of it for me. I am going endorse Clegg's right now, right here. Be careful this time of year when you bring home your groceries!

Yep, that's a Click Beetle. I haven't seen those in a long time. I remember playing with those as a kid. If you press your finger down on their backs they'll click their heads downward and still make a snapping sound. Then when you let go if they are still clicking they'll pop up in the air.

It didn't take much to amuse me as a kid...
