Default Farmers Market Chicken

I know there have been various threads and mainly a good one on Beef. I'd like to know what farmers market you get your chicken from and what farm it's from. I'm mainly interested in it being All Natural/Cage free at least. Thanks!

Coon Rock Farms sells chicken at several local farmer's markets. I've bought from them at Moore Square. Coon Rock Farm (http://coonrockfarm.com/Buy.html - broken link)

Not sure about the cage-free stuff but just an FYI to all, never overpay for chicken that is labeled "organic". The FDA had mandated that chickens be steroid-free for at least 20 years now.

Organic chickens are fed organically grown grain. Regular chickens can be fed grain that was grown with pesticides etc. You can find more information on the Oregon Tilth website.

This is wrong on many levels. For starters the FDA doesn't regulate steroids that producers pass off under other names.

This is true to a point, but real organic chicken has been fed an organic diet as well as being hormone and antibiotic free and other factors such as being able to acess the outdoors etc.

That fact that we're having this discussion just points out the obvious problems that exist with some of the terms used to label food.

I was just reading an article about the meanlessness of the term "Free range".

There's a guy that sells mostly grass fed beef at the Raleigh market - can't remember the name of the farm, he'g got a big freezer case, in the indoor section, a binder full of pictures of his farm. I had a long conversation with him over the weekend about the sorry state of the food supply when it comes to beef. Anyway, I could have sworn he told me that he was going to be getting into poultry soon.

I'm a Registered Dietitian and the terminology for labelling foods is very confusing and can be really misleading for the average consumer.

The Durham Farmer's Market has people selling meat there. I don't know if it's chicken. Check out the vendors list:
