For true vinegar-based "NC style" chopped bbq experience Clyde Cooper's in downtown Raleigh is the only answer.

I've eaten there many times. It's very good but I wouldn't say it's the only answer.

I've been to Bullocks a number of times as it's near my home- have to say, I've never been very impressed with it. QShack in Durham is back to being good after having been subpar for a while. I will HIGHLY recommend Allen and Son on 86 in Chapel Hill (take I-40 W to exit 266, make a right onto 86, and it will be just before the RR tracks, about 2 miles on the left). I was there today actually after not having been there for several years. The bbq pork was really, really, really good. Others had the ribs and found them quite tasty too. Tried to not let the 90.5 sanitation score bother me

Bullock's was the place I was thinking about. Someone I sat next to on a plane had suggested it. I'm just curious about their hours. Are they open on Sunday's?

Allen & Son in Chapel Hill is also very well regarded for NC BBQ.

I'm pretty sure Bullocks is closed Sundays. Also, beware that they only take cash! And I still don't think it's that good....

Bon's BBQ was better than Allen & Son back in the day, but it closed and reopened as Bon' s Home Cookin - I haven't been there yet, but it was great BBQ. Bon's and Mama Dip's - same family.

Ditto for me. I live 2-3 miles from Bullocks, and I drive to Allen and Son when I want BBQ.

I think someone was telling me about this place just the other day. Bon is Mama Dip's daughter, right?

Be aware that NC style Bar-B-Que is a vinegar base sauce. Being a long term Michigander myself, I can attest that you have never seen this style of Bar-B-Que anywhere else. It is a little bit of an acquired taste.
I like the NC style, my son loves the NC style, my wife hates the NC style.
I have eaten at only two Raleigh area BBQ restaurants; Smithfields (a local chain), and Holden's in Youngsville (on Capital Blvd/US-1 north of Raleigh). Smithfields is good, but I like Holden's better.
