There are 3 major hospitals in the area and there are 3 other smaller hospitals. You got of course Duke Medical center. The pay there is not the best, but they are the best hospital by far in terms of a major medical center. The other big one is UNC Medical center. Not as big as Duke but still a level 1 Trauma center with all the stuff any other major hospital would have. These are probably the best hospitals in the area but pay the least. In Raleigh, they have Wake Med and Rex medical center. Smaller hospitals but have great Cardiac programs from what I hear. Wake Med is the big medical center in Raleigh, its non-teaching, unlike Duke and UNC if thats what you are looking for. Rex is a nice small hospital, centrally located to all areas. I hope this helps, you should go to the Hospitals website first to see benifits and all that. I would recomend Travel nursing instead of taking a full time job until you find the best place for you, that way if you don't like the hospital you are at, you can leave in 3 months and try another hospital. But to Be honest, this area is one of the best in the country for Nursing and health care in general. Good luck!

Default Nurses

Yeah but depending where in NY $35 & $36 bucks an hour doesnt mean much,on Long Island $35 dollars an hour isnt much. The Long Island property taxes are a joke.$8000 to 15,000 a year is the average my relatives struggle to pay.I have no clue why they do it.

So maybe to some $24 wont be to bad, yet in my opinion nurses and teachers are not paid enough.

Thanks --T

Hey everyone- I'm looking for a physical therapist position in the same hospitals mentioned in this post. Does anyone know of other rehab hospitals in the Triangle area besides WakeMed and UNC Med Ctr?

Also, can a physical therapist expect the same paycut as nurses? I'm coming from Boston where the avg physical therapist salary runs b/t $24-28/hr.

Thanks much!
Jason

My wife is looking for an occupational therapy job and has not found anything in 6 months. But, her situation is different in that she does not want to work in a hospital. She'd rather work in a smaller rehab clinic. She also wants to work part time, but with a regular schedule (i.e., not PRN).

She is constantly finding full time and PRN positions open in home health, senior care, and hospitals (both PT and OT). Perhaps I can get her to PM you with some of the info that she has researched so far. She has lots of job boards and websites that she searches through each day.

Mr hockey said there are 3 major hospitals in the area and there are 3 other smaller hospitals.
Duke and UNC are 2 of the bigger ones. Wake Med and Rex medical are 2 of the smaller ones.

Can someone tell me what the other major hospital is and the other smaller hospital too?

Also Mr H mentioned what hospitals pay poorly but not the ones that paid well. Could someone post that too?

My wife is a Recovery Room nurse and will be looking to work starting in September.

Thanks!

D

Wake Med is generally considered a major hospital. The three majors are Duke, UNC, and Wake Med. I'm not sure which three he meant as smaller hospitals, as there are more than 3 smaller hospitals. However, virtually all of them are affiliated with either Duke, UNC, or Wake Med. In Raleigh, Rex is affiliated with UNC, and there is Duke Raleigh (formerly Raleigh Community) and Wake Med Cary (formerly Western Wake). Wake Med also has a freestanding ER called Wake Med North. In Durham there is also Durham Regional, which is affiliated with Duke. I can't think of an unaffiliated hospital off the top of my head unless you throw a wider net and look at hospitals outside the core Triangle like Alamance Regional and Johnston Memorial.
