I'm bummed I missed the recent private tour held this past July 26th. You can see some pics from the latest tour here (http://www.trianglemodernisthouses.com/july26.htm - broken link).

A modernist symposium will be held in Chapel Hill August 2, 2008.

Darn! All these cool things (this and the tax holiday) are happening when I'll be back in Portland. I love some of the mid-century homes I've seen in Cameron Village.

I've always loved the modern style houses and was kind of shocked there weren't more of them in this area considering the slew of new home builds. It's likely a demand issue more than anything apparently.

Oh how cool...these houses fascinate me...every so often I'll get a glimpse of one in a tree clearing. As much as I love old homes, these really bring in nature.

NRG,

You always find some of the most interesting things to do in the Triangle area. How do you do it? Do you ever sleep?

Edited to add: And I still can't give you any more rep points. How many do I have to spread around before I can give you more?!!!

I like to pretend my house is rockin' mid-century modern, but it really is just a traditional brick ranch from the 50s. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

As the website NRG refers to indicates, there are actually a lot of modernist houses in this area, mostly due to the history of the NC State School of Design. It is discussed on the TMH website. Sign up for TMH's emails and you will be kept up with any upcoming talks/tours,etc.

I iwill brag and say that my house is shown on the TMH website!

If you are interested in modernist architecture, you should also be aware of DOCOMOMO NC, which is a recently started NC chapter of a national organization which works to DOcument and COnserve the MOdernist MOvement in architecture. Their website is here:North Carolina Modern

Nice! It must be very cool to live in a work of art like that...

Now who is going to sell me Falling Water. For say, under $100K.

Scorp200,

While they often ARE expensive, nothing says that modern HAS to be expensive! We just designed and built a modest house for ~110/SF and are looking for more opportunities to develop/prove this point for others.

It's about having a different concept of "home" than the commercial market out there represents.

Glad to see some positive PR. Keep it up NR!

Kim

Scorp, I'd settle for a weekend trip to Fallingwater. I saw the PBS special on it some years ago. What an amazing place.

Ok, do tell Kim. I get the idea that it's looking at home differently than the commercial market. But I'm not creative enough to figure out how to do it for $110 sf. Do you have any pictures you want to share with us?

And NRG as always, excellent thread. Thanks for the info. I've never lived in a modernist home but I like the idea.
