The nicest gyms in the area I've found are O2 fitness. They're modeled after the Equinox gyms in NY and LA. As nice as they are, the enrollment rates are lower than some of the other gyms in the area.

It depends what kind of environment/equip/services you are looking for- we've found just about every price point. On the whole, if you want a decent gym with classes, good trainers & good equipment it's usually @ $50/mo. Joining fees can be negotiable & many have deals. Compared to the Boston Sports Clubs & Healthworks the rates are great.

Beware of commitments. Go month-to-month.

We go to O2 fitness in Cary and really enjoy it. They do have a month to month thing. I think it's around $50.00.

Seaboard in downtown Raleigh is amazing. Very clean, excellent machines, and never crowded. I know it won't stay like that, but right now, it's amazing. I think it's about $50/month.

$17.00 per month at Fitness 19. They have at least two locations; one in Cary at the corner of High House and Cary Parkway and one in North Raleigh (Leesville Road area.)

Fitness 19 is a great place... the one in Cary... Just changed my life!!!
I joined the one on High House yesterday. Clean baic gym.
The deal I got there was only $9 a month plus $59 to join.

Do tell. What are the stipulations? Do you only get to work out on alternate Wednesdays between 9am and 5pm, or can you go anytime?

What type of equipment is available. 90% of my workout is with free weights. But I use some of the specialty machines for certain muscle groups. I don't need a pool, spinning classes, locker room, smoothie bar, etc. Just weight benches, dumbells, etc.

I realize this is an old thread but just wanted to bump it and see if there are any updated comments for someone looking to join a gym today. Family commitments and work will only allow me to go to the gym a couple of times per week so I am looking for something fairly economical.

I would be very interested in a place that allows drop-ins. Ie. Pay as you go. Anyone aware of some good gym deals out there?

I signed up for Planet Fitness and did the Black Card membership. The Black Card lets you use any of the locations and I have one near my house in Knightdale and near work off of Atlantic Ave. I can also bring one guest each time I go. It's a year-long contract with an annual fee of $30 and a monthly rate of $20. I take my hubby with me when I go by the one near the house, so we both get a gym membership for $20. He doesn't work near a location to go on his lunch break.

Its a very basic gym - lots of cardio equipment and a fair number of machine and free weights. Its clean and the staff are friendly. We weren't looking for classes or anything - just something indoors so that we'd stop using the weather as an excuse.
