Cary has the lowest property tax rate in Wake County and is far lower than the rate in the town/city of Chapel Hill & Durham.

Obviously you would spare yourself the reassignment mess that Wake County subjects families to because of growth and the county's desire to diversify schools based on socio-economic status.
We lived in Cary for two years and I will say that we found it to be very safe and extremely family oriented and the Town of Cary parks are fantastic. Definitely take a look at Cary. Chapel Hill is a very socially liberal town which may or may not be your cup of tea or you may not care. My guess is after visiting the two it will be obvious which area has the feel you are looking for.

We are moving from s.Fla to Cary/Chapel Hill area.. Schools are very impt to us.. They need to be very good thru H.S. Seems like Chapel Hill is the right place. They are ranked #2 in the state! wow! I know that Cary has some good schools but most of the people I know in Cary send their kids to private ... Apparently, most of the schools in Cary are year round. This is definately not for us! We will continue are investigation.

we looked all over Cary and Chapel Hill and definitely chose Chapel Hill. Yes it costs more but you truly do get what you pay for. Traditional school year with good neighborhood schools with no chance of reassignment, mainly because we live in a walking to school neighborhood. Check out neighborhood on Homestead Drive. Very convenient to shopping, Carrboro, Chaple Hill and only minutes to I40. The best of all worlds for us. We have two rising 2nd graders and are very pleased with the last 6 weeks of school they attended at McDougle.
And we are a little bit "weird" so we fit right in in Chapel Hill. I'm native Southerner and DH is by adoption and Cary juasr felt too much like the nickname is has Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees. Also our neighborhood is full of diversity but it is very stable with not much relocating from what I'm told. That stable neighborhood can affect your home's value.
