Hi,

I just got back from seeing NC and rented a home located in Cary. I was impressed with what I saw. The atmosphere is quite different from NYC. Roads clean (no pot holes!), yards landscaped; even the sides of the road were manicured beautifully, people were nice, homes affordable. Even the homeless people were decent.

Now, my hubby and I are considering moving to the area. Please let me know how the job and housing market are holding up. From what I hear the school system is great. The area I am targeting would place her in the Salem school system. How is that school?

Any info would be appreciated.

Salem is supposedly very good. When my DD started middle school, 1/2 of her friends went to Reedy Creek MS and the other 1/2 to Salem. Most of the parents I know whose kids went to Salem are very pleased.

The job market completely depends upon what sort of work you do. It's been said over and over again, but it's worth repeating: please do the most you can to secure employment before moving here. Some people move here without doing their homework & they search for jobs for months and months without getting anything while other people find jobs within their first week. Some people have jobs that pay wages similarly to what they earned in NYC, while others are offered much much much less. You have to do your own research to find out which camp you fall into. At the very least, come here with at least 6 months worth of cash to live on and a plan in case you can't find any employment in that time. Good luck!

Thank you MrsSteel.

We are still debating on how to make the move. This would be the first time we live out of the state of NY. Do we rent first and then buy the home or do we buy the home, find a job down there and then move? At the present moment we rent so selling a home would not a prob.

I would find a job you love, find a nice home to rent close to your job, then spend 6-12 months learning the area and then when you are ready start looking to buy a house (if that is what you want).

I highly recommend having a job before you move. If not it would be wise to have at least a 6 month nest egg to live off of. I also highly recommend renting as the Triangle is a HUGE area and it takes time to learn the different areas and figure out just what part you may want to live in.

Good Luck!

Default Have a plan

Moving to Raleigh area check list:
1) Secure job!
2) Rent close to said job
3) Mingle with locals
4) Travel the area on nights and weekends to see which part of Raleigh suits you best should you decide to stay
