The Triangle business community will be happy about this. Mexico is the second largest U.S. export market. Business travelers in the Triangle currently have to go through Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Houston etc to reach Mexico City. It's also an indication of how many Latinos have moved into the Triangle and have the economic means to travel by air.
So the U.S. DOT has said it is refusing to renew the antitrust exemption for Aeromexico and Delta codesharing over what it says is anticompetitive behavior by the Mexican government at MEX regarding allocation of slots. I guess it's unclear whether this will have any impact on Aeromexico's plans at RDU. It's also possible that something will happen that will reverse the feds' decision.
And in other international destination news for RDU, they've just announced Copa will launch year-round service to Panama City on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays starting in June.
