Hi Since we are new to the area we are hearing about this festival coming up next weekend? Has anyone been in the past. Did you feel it was also fun for children? Is it extremely crowded and hard to get around.

I think bringing kids is fine. It can be crowded (I think the usually get about 60K-75K people in attendance), but if you get there more during the early hours it is not as bad. It is mainly just a bunch of food vendors along Fayetteville Street with a large band stage at one end with music all day long and an awesome firework show at the end of the night. It is worth checking out IMO.

THere are some AWESOME pictures from last year's event on a website located here to give you a better idea what it is like.

This year Raleigh Wide Open is being held in conjunction with the public opening of the new convention center. The convention center will be open to the public that Friday (from 2-10 pm) and Saturday until 10 pm. Here is the Convention Center website (http://www.raleighconvention.com/grand-opening.php - broken link) highlighting all the activities.
