I've never been sure what counts as SW Durham, but jill7930 has named some good places.
I agree with dcgrl about Bocci; my family and I have what we call Pizza Fridays and that is where we go every Friday afternoon after I leave work. We like the relaxed atmosphere and it is very family oriented. My kids love eating out doors and sometimes playing with other kids that they would meet there. You can get a variety of italian dishes etc. Check it out.
sorry, but I can't stand Shiki Sushi. When I need my sushi fix, I head down to Akashi at 54/55. Soooooo much better, and much cheaper to boot.
We have yet to try Akashi, and we need to (been meaning to, just haven't done it!). Unfortunately, I just took my sushi-loving daughter back to school (in Michigan), and it will not be easy to convince hubby to go for sushi when she's not in town...
I second Sal's, Bandito's, and Pulchenella's. Also Orient Garden on Hwy. 54 off Fayetteville Road. Excellent Chinese! And O'Brian's BBQ on Hwy. 55 has great ribs.
My wife and I LOVE Shiki Sushi. It is the best sushi the area has to offer in our opinion. This place was recommended to us from multiple people. We took my mom there, and she has never had Sushi in her 59 years. She loved it. They always have buy one-get one on sushi rolls, and on certain nights they also have 1/2 off bottles of wine. It is an excellent value.
I'll 3rd Sitar India Palace and Tonali, and I'll add Guglhupf and Taqueria La Vaquita, just a little more central Durham. Oh, and there's a Baba Ghannouj at the intersection of Hwys 54 and 55.
Ooh, I'm so glad to find this thread. We just moved to this area, and I've driven by all these places and not known where to go. I've always noticed it's busy outside of Shiki Sushi, so I figured it must be good. I'm a sushi addict and haven't had any since the move besides the ones made at Harris Teeter (which are better than expected). Also, good to know which ones are kid friendly since we usually have the kids in tow. For this reason, we have been sticking to the chain ones around Southpoint, which I'm already bored of since I've eaten at them before, know what I mean?
