I got caught doing 71 in a 45 a few weeks ago in raleigh. First ticket I've ever had in the 6 years I've had my license. I've contacted a few lawyers and have basically gotten 2 different opinions:
1. Since its my first time it could get reduced to 9 over with some community service, or worst case 14 over and use my pjc.
2. After the N&O article last year about how slack the ticket system is and the new bills that passed, DA's and judges are alot more strict. The best I could get from the DA is 14 over and HOPE I get one of the nice judges and he lets me use my pjc. These lawyers warn me that once I plead guilty to the 14 over the judge could potentially screw me over by not granting me the pjc. Some even said it would take community service to even get the DA to talk 14 over.
Anyone have any recent experience with a ticket this bad?
Did you see my other post for the other speeder? Please reference that post. However, come on buddy, 71 in a 45? That is seriously putting other drivers and pedestrians at risk. Best advice I can give you, is to slow down! We all let the speed get away from us, from time to time, myself included, but 71 in a 45 is serious speeding! You could even be charged with reckless driving and the judge might really throw the book at you, not to mention your insurance rates, Ouch! I would be sincere, gracious, humble and ask for mercy.
Wow. No offense, but maybe you deserve what you get. Can you imagine if a mother and her child were trying to cross the road in a 45 zone? They would never even see you coming. You would never see them in time. That's really dangerous and I get extremely upset when I see someone drive like that. Please don't do that. You are putting others at grave risk.
Man you guys are quick to judge without knowing the circumstances. First of all, This was on a light traffic 4 lane road with nothing but trees around. Nobody's going to be crossing this road unless its a deer. Second, I have a mild case of IBS which in case some of you didn't know can be extremely painful. I was trying to get to the closest gas station and didn't realize how fast I was going. I'm not a chronic speeder, nor do I own a radar detector. I'm looking for advice from people that have been in this situation before, so no more comments from the peanut gallery please. Thanks.

Don't think I would try to explain to the judge how it was a safe road to speed on and about the IBS.
