We did it our own yard for 3 years but no matter what we could not control the wild violets so we ended up contacting a yardman. He comes and sprays the yard several times a year and aerates in the fall. All other yardwork mowing, planting, trimming etc... my husband does and I help.
Ah, this might be a distinction. I love wild violets and clover, and encourage them and all kinds of non-grass. Our yard is very natural vs. groomed, though.

Would you believe I pluck them out by hand? DH thinks I'm insane. Every morning after taking the kids to the bus stop, I spend 15-20 minutes plucking those little violets out of the grass.
What strange universe is this where your neighbors look down on you for taking care of your own property? What kind of world do we live in where people are offended by the little violets that dare take root in their fescue monoculture? Why do we insist on poisoning the soil, groundwater and wildlife for the sake of a yard that looks just the same as everyone else's?
I don't live in NC either but I love to do my own yard work. I have a smallish yard and enjoy cutting the grass and enjoy landscaping. I'm the nurturing type and love to plant new things and take care of them. This would be a great thread for the garden forum.
