Ummm, I think the drought probably is over.

(As I watch yet another torrential rainfall outside my Chapel Hill window...)

The big question remaining is how all this rain has impacted the groundwater levels. All of the reservoirs in our area are above "full" now, but groundwater levels have still been low. Hopefully Hanna and this week of rain events will have served to substantially recharge the subsurface water which provides over 50% of the base flow to local streams and Rivers in NC.

Sadly parts of North Carolina out by the mountains have not been as fortunate as us here in the Piedmont and are still in an exceptional drought.

Three days ago, we were at 95% full levels. With the week ahead, we should be at 110% or better. I say the drought is officially over.

Filling lakes is only one parameter to define drought.

Most NC groundwater monitoring wells are below mean averages.
