Hmmm.... we've been a Beetle owner for several years now and have not had any issues w/ either the clutch or electrical. None of my Beetle friends have had issues w/ these either.
There are currently some Vintage Beetles for sale on Craigslist. Had one in college. LOVED that car!!!! It's fun driving something that is older than you are. But now I would not want my children in a vintage beetle.... not with the the big SUVS on the roads here. To scary for me.
You've been lucky with your New Beetles. Many had numerous window failures where the window would drop in the door. Others too. Improved in this year's Consumer Reports to, I think, average.
I despise any GM vehicle. My father worked for GM and I was always able to get deep discounts on their vehicles, so I bought many. I always had problems with them. Many times major problems. I will never go back. Now I will only buy Ford, Toyota, Honda and Nissan.
I helped my Mom buy a car from carmax in Raleigh and they made it way too easy to buy a car. I would suggest you knowing what you want before you go in though. Not terribly knowledegable about cars overall - they just sell what they have on the lot or what they can get transferred in <grin>. but the cars they have are in pristine (cosmetically at least) condition. If you decide *what* you want, it would be a decent place to buy one at an upfront cost (no negotiating...)
Since when were Audi, Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen and BMW cars unreliable?
I would agree that they are overly complex (for example, my car has self leveling headlights, rain sensing wipers, park distance control, auto dimming mirror, speed sensitive radio volume, tire pressure monitor, and a ventilation system that switches to cabin air when it determines the outside air is too polluted), but IMO unreliable only when compared to Japanese cars.
Craigslist! No pushy sales people, no high pressure loan sharks, no calls back after you said no three or more times to the pushy sales person.
Shop from the convenience of your own home, make a phone call, get details, get the VIN#, order a Carfax, and buy or no buy! Look for cars that still have the Mfg warranty on them, you save the dealers mark up to cover warranty items. They are already covered and usually transferable upon buying the vehicle from the manufacturer. I know Honda's does.

Unreliable NO, Expensive to maintain YES. Ouch when something goes wrong with them. As they age you can save time and have your pay check directly deposited into you Service locations business of choice!
That is why their locations bills have the THANK-YOU FOR YOUR BUSINESS preprinted in their Sales Slips.

Check Consumer Reports. They are finally starting to improve from pure junk at a high price. Price doesn't always buy reliability. Try Jaguar and Land Rover from the UK for examples of high priced unreliability.
Stone Cars on Old Wake Forest Road is great. They specialize in 10K and under imports. I have bought several cars from them as have several family members and friends. They allow you to have the cars checked out too. They even disclose any issues previous lookers found if they did not buy a car. No used car is 100% perfect..so usually SOMETHING shows up in an inspection.
