ABC stores
As I understand it, wine and beer can be sold at grocery stores, but hard liquor can only be sold at ABC stores.
I enjoy fine cognac and Irish Whiskey. In California, we have stores that carry really good selections of the higher-end spirits. Yesterday, for example, I found a Bushmills 1608 - the 400th anniversary edition - not something that your typical liquor store carries, but that a good shop would have, or could order.
What I'm wondering is - are there ABC shops with better selections than others, or that can special order items of interest?
It may seem like an odd question - but the entire concept is foreign to me (the way the stores are set up), so I don't know how any of it works..

I'm not sure if you can special order from the ABC store, but here is the link to their web site where you will be able to contact them. They do have a list of their approved spirits and prices maybe another store would stock different items, I don't know for sure. Hopefully someone else might have the correct answer on this board for you.

OK - now I'm even more confused.
So, if I am to understand this correctly, all ABC stores carry the same products at the same prices? And if it's not on that list, then you can't buy it in the state anywhere?

The liquor laws do really suck in this state. Just try to order a mimosa with Sunday brunch. Sorry man.
Most ABC stores I've been in have exactly the same merchandise. However, you can special order your higher end stuff. Restaurants must do this, since you can get nice scotches and whiskeys at steakhouses around here.

originally hailing from Miami, imagine my reaction on new year's eve searching for a six pack. the ABC stores were the only thing open and I had to end up buying hard liquor. It left my head scratching...."what good does it do to have alcohol controlled in this manner? You can buy a six pack and wine at SOME gas stations but not at all ABC liquor stores.
In Miami, i was used to being able to buy a six pack or wine at any CVS , supermarkets, gas stations. Liquor + wine + beer was always found at liquor stores...

the ABC store's adjust their inventory by the demographics of their location. To understand our liquor laws, you must understand the history of the old North State. This is North Carolina, not the state that you moved from. We did not have liquor by the drink(cocktails in restaurants) until 1978. Many counties voted this down for years after it was legal. Prior to 78, you could brown bag(bring your own bottle and or setups) in many eating establishments. We had Blue Laws in the south that prohibited all stores from opening on Sundays up until the mid 70's. It amuses me when newcomers complain about the way we do things. We had more US transplants in 2007 than any other state. We must be doing something right. Can you imagine southerners invading long island or california and bitching about the lack of our culture. That is exactly what goes on around here. Think about it.
