I want to take out the summer flowers in my outside pots and plant a whole bunch of pansies. Do you think pansies will survive all through the winter here or will they perish?
they may live through Thanksgiving....still gets cold....not Northeast crazy cold but most nights dip into the 40's. Brr...I'm cold thinking about it...
For me, I plant cactus because I'm a bit tougher than the average guy.....
We planted pansies last fall and they did AMAZINGLY. They lasted well through the winter and into the summer. The only problem we had were the deer trying to eat them.
ETA: We planted ours in the ground. I'm not sure how they would do in pots.

The larger your pot, the better they will do. If it is a hanging basket, the dirt will get cold enough to kill them.
Put them in the ground and they will bloom until May.
I shot this on March 25 of this year, and these pansies and violas seemed to be happy and perky:
I plant pansies every fall. I leave them all winter long and even when they have had snow/ice lay on them, they perk up in spring and look fabulous. In fact, most springs I hate tearing them out to put in summer annuals. Pansies are lovely flowers and well worth the money.
Me too! I thought I'd have to fire up my loud liberal mouth!
