Default Icy roads in Raleigh Metro??

Hi there!

On average how often to ice storms occur in Raleigh Metro? How many times a year would you say the roads are Icy to where it shuts the city down?

And on average how many days a year do you go without power?

I'm originally from Long Island and some people in raleigh told me to avoid Raleigh unless i'm ready to deal with icy roads every year and power outages that could last for days, this is not an issue on Long Island.

Any info helps.

Thanks

I've been here for three years and haven't seen power outage. A few years before that they had a storm that kept power off for a few days....but I also note that many lines and poles and stuff have been upgraded since then.

As for ice storms....once or twice a year seems to be it....if that....but next year we could get hit with 5....only Mother Nature knows!

Believe me....you get worse weather on Long Island by far.

It's worth noting that there are a lot of times where Burlington will get snow, Durham may get ice, and it may be rain in parts of Raleigh and to the east and south, depending on where the fronts go. The closer you are to the coast, the less likely you'll see freezing precipitation, is a loose rule of thumb. To say that an ice storm along with several days without power is a certainty every winter season would be a major stretch though. That's like saying upstate New York gets a 10-foot snow storm once or twice every year. It's always a possibility each winter, but it's never something you can guarantee each year.

Default Ice & Snow in Raleigh?

I see, so the icy roads do not happen every year?

But on average how many times does it snow in Raleigh? Should i pack my shovel when & if we move there?

Thanks again

I have lived here most of my life (since I was 3) and we have never had a snow shovel. Granted there were a couple of times when it would have been handy (in 1999 when we had a huge storm), but if there is a storm that big, then the whole city basically shuts down, people don't go out driving. In this area, with snow, it typically will snow an inch or two, then the next day it is gone. Now, I say that is typical. Ice, it happens, but MOST people just stay inside and wait for the ice to melt! I say most because there are those who like to "get out in it".

I think you can go to wral.com and check out the weather/snow/ice situation

Leigh

Pack your snow shovel.
It doesn't take up much room and is great for collecting leaf debris along the curb.
I also like it for scooping up leaves if I decide to bag them.

For snow? Less likely.

Gee, I have a snowblower. I run it every year just to keep it in running order. It seems to serve as insurance against getting snow.

Yes, keep a snow shovel handy just in case... better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

And don't get rid of your snowbrush/scraper for your car either... there's plenty of mornings when I'm greeted by frosty car windows!

Default Thanks -- I'll pack my shovel!

Thank you!

Sounds like I'll pack the shovel to be on the safe side. Even here in Las Vegas we get some snow. Looks kinda funny though when you wake up to see snow on your cactus.

And my kids like snow, so some is ok with me.

Thanks again.
