My husband and I like the sound of everything about N Raleigh wake forest area but are from PA and terrified about the tornados and hurricanes. There are no basements so what do you do? We dont have kids but 3 dogs that are our kids and worry about them or something happening to them in a storm.
Can someone tell us more about theese tornados or hurricanes?
Thanks!

Hurricanes are certainly more prevalent along the coast -- you may see some wind damage and/or water in the Triangle. I have yet to weather a hurricane here in the Raleigh area, and I certainly never thought I'd be praying for one, just to provide relief from the drought.

Don't let a fear of tornadoes and hurricanes keep you away from NC. My family returned to coastal NC when I was 11, and I moved to the Triangle area a little over two years ago. In all of that time, I weathered a number of hurricanes, only two of which did any significant damage to the homes in which I lived.

A number of homes here in the Piedmont have basements, generally walk-out types. You are safe in an interior room, small closet or bath, away from windows, in a tornado. Living along the coast necessitates boarding, or putting shutters, on the windows, and bringing-in outdoor furniture and the like, but a hurricane is easily prepared for -- you have time to 'batten down the hatches.'

hurricanes aren't a big deal - mostly inland we don't have too many issues. sometimes flooding or wind damage, but rarely anything too severe this far inland.

Tornados aren't that bad, seem to happen *mostly* down east...but they happen here as well. Basements argent necessary, an interior room ( bathroom, etc) suffices.

I could tell you stories...but I won't scare you. One tornado and one hurricane bad enough for me to recall, and ive been here my whole life...so, two instances in 30 years isn't so bad.

Ice storms are actually more of a concern, quite honestly. We're overdue for one....

Hurricane Fran hit Raleigh hard. Nobody expected it to go inland retaining so much power.

A big tornado hit North Raleigh in 1988. Not much you can do in the crappy homes built here. Just find an interior room on the bottom floor, avoid windows, and pray.

Rare but can happen. Danger is real but probability is low.

Both of which I was thinking of. Two bad storms ( ok, worst for this area, imo) and I lived through 2 houses being demolished by them.

We don't buy houses with pine trees on the lot (or that could fall onto the house)! lol

thats my suggestion!

Default crappy homes

Why do you say the homes are built crapy? How about an older home with a basement? Are the built better?

Neither of these happen enough to worry about them.
