where are craftsman style homes?
Hi all-am building a craftsman style home and want to look at some exteriors to see color combinations as well as look at different stone applications. Can anyone tell me the names of some subdivisions (any in the Raleigh/Durham area) that may have a lot of craftsman/bungalow style homes where I could drive around? I've seen the tan/green/gray, would kind of like to see maybe something different?
Thanks

Bedford, off Falls of Neuse Road has alot of that style and also Falls River.
You may be able to search online and find the houses and you can see the colors from there.

A couple of years ago we painted our 90 year old craftman and used the internet and library as resources for paint colors. If you just google "Craftsman style homes and exterior paint" you will get many sites w/ good links. There are many GREAT books that I found that specifically deal w/ paint color combinations for Craftsmans. I previewed them on Amazon and then checked them out of the local library. Also, I highly recommend www.rejuvenation.com .... they have amazing period lighting, switch covers, medicine cabinets, etc.
One of the fun things about painting a Craftsman is you can get at least 4-5 paint colors on it... possibly more depending on your architectural detail. Its like being a kid in a candy shop.
Have fun!

As Mike mentioned... Boylan Heights, Historic Oakwood, Five Points in Raleigh---as well as Mordecai, Oberlin and Brooklyn/Glenwood.
In Durham, Trinity Park, Watts-Hillandale and Old West Durham areas have a lot too.

One last tip, you might want to consult a historic color consultant. Here in Portland we have tons of them locally. But I remember finding some on the internet too. I was particually impressed with Robert Schweitzer (www.historichousecolors.com) (broken link). His website does list a residents in Willow Springs and Durham that he has completed. But one was Victorian and one was Georgian. He does have numerous photos of Craftsman style homes that he has created the color palette.
If I had found him earlier in my research process I would have used him. My husband too had to be convinced about 5 colors. But the convincing was painful. We joke that it almost ended the marriage. Not to mention my garage was full of sample quarts he did not like. Ultimately, we found another Craftsman house in another neighborhood that we both liked and it was for sale, so the guy gave us paint samples but only because he was selling.
The difficult thing about driving around and looking at houses is I would find one I liked but then couldn't figure out the color, even w/ my color decks in the car and camera. If I had it to do again I'd hire someone. An excellent paint job adds so much value and it's nice when your home stands out.
Good luck!
