I plan to move to the Raleigh area in the next year, and was just wondering exactly how hard a job as a medical assistant would be to come by. I also have a pit bull and have heard that it is illegal to have one in city limits. Can anyone help?
Can't really help you about the job prospects but my gut tells me you shouldn't have a problem - you may want to check though and see how the pay compares to where you are living now. Regarding the pit bull - Raleigh does not have an ordinance outlawing pit bulls. However when I adopted my pit bull mix from a rescue shelter, I was told that some apartment complexes will not rent to individuals with pit bulls. They also asked that I check to make sure my Home Owner's Association didn't have something in the covenants against pit bulls - they didn't. From the amount of pit bulls I see at the dog park, it can't be too much of an issue though. Good luck!
I know there will be places that accept pit bulls, you just have to look. This area has the vet school and many students have dogs. As fas as getting a job as a MA, I don't think that you'll have a problem. I can't speak for the Raleigh area, but if you're in the medical field, it's a good place. I'd do some searching around on CL, newspapers, monster, etc to se what's available. I'd go as far as calling a couple doctor's offices to get some input. Good luck!
I think at one time, the city of Durham was contemplating a ban on pit bulls, but the proposal never went anywhere. I could be wrong about this, but I think I remember hearing about it a year or two ago.
Most, if not EVERY single apartment complex I've EVER looked at or tried to applied to (including privately rented homes and 'slummy' apartment complexes) plainly ban Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Rotties, German Shepherds, Chows and basically every other 'bully breed'.
It's not to say you won't find complexes that turn a blind eye, but you will likely have to sign a form saying that you will not keep these kinds of dogs while in residence.
You shouldn't really be surprised though - this sort of "breedism" is very, VERY common across the U.S.
Okay I don't know if my reply worked, so I'll write it again. If you go to Wakegov.com, in the search bar type in "pit bulls". There should be a option to view a housing list. Click on the housing list. Listed are apartment complex and their pet policies. The apartment complexes with no breed restriction and high enough weight limits are high lighted in yellow. I just found this list tonight. I am so excited to visit the apartments, I hope I am not dreaming.
