NCMommy, you may already know this but just in case not... Vonage does not have 911 service. We decided on our local cable company's digital pkg because they offered 911 services. I hope my kids NEVER have to call 911, but if they do they know what to do. They both learned in preschool and it was not one of those things I wanted to "reteach" them. But my kids are 4 and almost 7. If your kids are older it might not be an issue.

This isn't true - Vonage does offer 911 service:

http://www.vonage.com/features.php?feature=911

For 911 service like to your landline service - verify that E911 service is available in your area. We're moving to Cary which already has E911 service. If you already have Vonage - you can verify your 911 service by calling 933 from your Vonage phone.

This is correct. And thanks for your concern and all but I am a mom of 4 kids.. I am the type that actually thinks about the 911 thing before making a decision on a phone. I know many might not... scary! LOL I have the digital phone now.. as I thought I did mention in my OP.. but anyway, at $60 a month after all the stinkin taxes and fees and for voicemail.. I rather pay the $30.25 rate and still have all my extras!!!!

My mistake. Vonage did not offer 911 in our area 2 years ago when we switched. And a Durham friend recently told me that his vonage did not do 911. But we obviously did not have all the info. Thanks for the correction.

NCMommy, glad to hear you checked the 911 service. I only mentioned it because I had a couple of Mom friends who did not think about it when they were switching services.

I've been considering Vonage or another digital phone. How have you handled sending and receiving faxes?

I've used vonage with my fax machine - but it's less than reliable for faxes. Often it will cut off in the middle of a fax. If you think about it - it's amazing it works at all. It has to go from an analog fax out, to a digital line, back to analog on the other end of the receiving fax all without messing up the weird screeching noises.

Anyway - my wife and I have completely switched to efax.com

I'm not sure if they still offer it - but they used to give you a free efax account as long as you didn't mind an out of state area code. We don't fax that often - so the free account worked great for us. People would fax to the number - and the fax would show up in our email. If we ever needed to send a fax, we just scanned it into the computer - and sent the scan via efax.
