Handy contact info for setting up utilities (elec, gas, water etc)?
Just thinking others here have moved to NC recently and might have such a list handy vs trying to grope around for it. If not, not a big thing, again just hoping to save time......I think most of these should be the same state-wide, but realize a few might not. Ones I can think of that would be a great ref not just for me but for others visiting the site for info:
- elec
- gas
- water
- cable TV (might vary some and probably 1-800 # for major company anyway)
- internet (same)
- phone

None of the above will be statewide. NC has numerous companies providing those services depending on the specific locale. Which county are you interested in?

I've been reading this forum for a little bit and notice that a few posters have said the garbage pick-up is covered by the city/county they live in. Is the same true for all cities/counties, or specific ones? I live in Durham city and county and will be moving into my home later this year. How do I find out if I have to pay for the garbage pick-up, or if it'll be covered by the city or county?

In the city of Durham, there is no additional fee for regular trash pickup:
City of Durham Trash FAQ (http://www.durhamnc.gov/departments/solid/trash_faq.cfm - broken link)
That's not the case everywhere. When I lived in Wake Forest, for example, there was an additional $15/month fee on our town utility bill to cover trash pickup.

The Durham City website lists this info.
Durham, NC - City of Medicine (http://www.durhamnc.gov/departments/solid/cart.cfm - broken link)
Edit: Sorry, preceding post answered the question before I'd finished my post.

Thank you! This was a great read. I didn't see this answered on the site, so hopefully someone here will know the answer. Are we allowed to put our address on the garbage can, or is that unnecessary? It appears my pick-up day will be Monday and I want to make sure I don't have to worry about my trash can disappearing if I can't make it home to put in away on windy days. If a neighbor were to see it, they would know where it belonged and may be able to put it back in front of my house (or in my yard).
