This is actually a small section of the downtown area. It is not representative of all of SE Raleigh, especially areas outside of the beltline.
That said, there has been some improvement activity in certain areas. There are investors that have been renovating houses scattered about these neighborhoods. I met a realtor who bought a home in the area and has been fixing up a few other properties. She did the same thing in Boylan Heights before it was what it is today. I am really hoping that things continue to improve and I can get in on the wave of pioneers before the crest! Either that, or it would be nice to try to make these historic neighborhoods a mixed-income community, consisting mostly of middle-class owners who actually live in and take pride in their houses. There have already been several renovations for lower income folks, and now some investors are coming in, so maybe it is well on its way.

I enjoyed seeing those pictures as well, I truly miss North Carolina. I lived in Elizabeth City and traveled to Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, and Charlotte occasionally. I went to an HBCU and we used to visit Shaw and St. Augs to compete in Athletics. Theres alot of culture and tradition in those old areas. One that you cannot get in any other part of Raleigh. Alot of legacy from the civil rights movement to the tradition and legacy of the local historically black universities. That section of Raleigh reminds me alot of Old Towne Portsmouth, VA. I'm actually considering relocating back to North Carolina and Raleigh is the city I'm considering. Great job with the pics, I'm glad I stumbled across them.

Wow....South East Raleigh looks a lot like most of Burlington Vermont, (or any other Vermont town for that matter) less the boarded up windows.

I would like to personally thank you for doing this!!! Thank you so much. About 6 months ago my brother in law and I walked through SE Raleigh with our camera and took a gang of pictures. At first I did not read your posting right and I said to myself, "this can't be real". Our intentions were and still are to, provide assistance cleaning up abandoned properties, and helping people haul away debris in the area. The reason behind this is the fact crime is born in squalor and filth. Also, investors and business owners do not want to do business in areas that are uncouth and disorderly. We would still like to encourage people in the community first to take pride in their community, and also get other citizens to understand that this IS a problem for EVERYONE. Many people on this forum are miles away from this area, and if they ride through this area they are probably going 100 mph. What is amazing about this area is the fact that CRIME and filth is expected there, and the problems arise when it spills over into prestigious areas of the city. The truth is that a problem is a problem, and in light of the present economic condition I believe we are going to see a lot of spill overs.
You have to be a pretty down to Earth person, and brave in some cases to be able to take those pictures, as people will look at you funny in the African-American community when you come through taking pictures. You know what I am talking about! Keep the photos coming because people ask questions about Raleigh, and exclude this area as if this is not Raleigh. Yes, this is a part of Raleigh that is hungry and neglected. Can you imagine the effects this level of squalor has on the psyche?
I will upload the pics soon. Thank you again! You really put things in perspective.

Are you serious? If someone came through my neighborhood taking pictures I'd wonder what they were doing. If I saw someone in a car that I didn't recognize, taking pictures of a group of neighborhood kids in some one's yard I'd call the police.

Where did he say he was taking pictures of neighborhood kids in someone's yard?????
He posted some of his photos on http://www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...ommentary.html and none of them contain pictures of any people other than his brother-in-law. I think what he is doing is good for the community, and I commend him for attempting to bring an awareness to some of the challenges that this community faces.

By all means, bring awareness to the poverty stricken areas of our community. In the original post, the 5th picture from the bottom is of a group of kids standing in some one's yard. I'm just saying that anyone would be leery of someone taking pictures of neighborhood kids. Maybe I'm just being too sensitive...It's been one of those days...
