I have no problem with capitalism whatsoever, I like money as next as the next guy but I wouldn't call the house flipping going on in that are and others here "vision".

I'll have to drive through there and take a look though, It's been a long time since I've seen that area so I am interested to see the change.

I have been following local issues in this area since the first time I did a run through the SE ITB neighborhoods several months ago. There are people very interested in helping the neighborhoods close to downtown become nice again. There seems to be a lot of other issues going on besides the fact that it is a low income neighborhood and a breeding ground for crime that are keeping the area down. There are many absentee landlords that have no interest in selling the property that has been in their family for years (and no interest in keeping the property up, either), as well as those who don't really want the neighborhood to be truly diverse in all the ways it needs to be in order to turn around, not to mention red tape of all sorts, comittees, etc.

I have been following a thread on another forum that has a lot of good discussion on there from several residents of the area who decided to take the plunge and revitalize their homes there. These people are not flippers looking to make a buck, but actual residents who actually see the potential of the neighborhood and hope to attract other homeowners that will take pride in their property. They are active in the community groups that have been talking about these issues, and provide some insight from the meetings they attend which sheds a lot of light on what is really going on. I don't think I can post the link here per site guidelines, but if you are interested in reading that thread, just PM me.

There have also been articles here and there in the N&O lately, one recent one: newsobserver.com | Problem homes still trouble neighbors (http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/668785.html - broken link) And one from July: newsobserver.com | Plans to clean up drug-infested block inch along (http://www.newsobserver.com/news/wake/story/643447.html - broken link)

Amen to that! I've been a little depressed because I can't find a good job in Florida and I want to pack up and move asap! I am hunting around in the Raleigh, Charlotte or Columbia, Charleston & Greenville SC area (can't decide yet!) and when I see pictures like these, I realize I am lucky to have a safe place to live, even if all of my retirement savings are going down the toilet!

By the way, I've been living in Bonita Springs for many years and I just saw a homeless woman for the first time. She was standing in front of an expensive gated community with a sign asking for money for food. (I doubt if she's still there.) I think these people are secretly put into a spaceship and sent away so the tourists don't see that Florida isn't Paradise after all.

Cute dog, by the way!

Well, it apparently intended to show a part of Raleigh that most people don't know exists and don't see on a regular basis, a balancing point that while this area is a nice place to live, it still has the same kinds of problems that all cities and towns have. It was certainly not meant to be a contest of "which city has the worst 'crap your pants' area"...

I think that it is a good thing to show all sides of a city for people who have never been there. There is no such thing as paradise anywhere, as there will (sadly) always be less fortunate people out there, and they need a place to live, too.

Being the seat of state government, it's inevitable there's a place to score coke and hookers not far from the center of the city. People act like it's a shock. They need to check out DC.

I completly Agree with you. If anyone thinks by transplanting themselves to another city, and that city does not have any issues is Living in a Fantasy World. I thought having this Pics thrown in your face was Pointless

well I live in Long Beach CA and we probably have hundreds of square miles this bad and worse! Its so bad out here, the gang random shootings have now gone to major freeways in broad day light! Used to be if you stayed away from the bad areas or did not drive through in the wee hours of the night, but now its all the time and you can get shot in the best neighborhoods . The Mexican gangs have literally take over a good part of the LA area.

The rich have their gated communities, the poor poverty stricken areas now fly all Mexican flags, and have grown and grown and grown HUGE, and the middle class is literally FLEEING.

My warning to other cities across the US, Don’t let what has happened to Southern CA happen in your area. Its become a real hell hole, and I live in a million dollar home in a great neighborhood. But I have to work and I have to shop , therefore I have to drive through and by the gangs, the crime, and the poverty. Its really like two worlds down here. The rich and the poor and nothing in between.

Oh plus, many, many people do not speak english, so we literally have two countries in LA.

Beware because if the citizens of these wonderful cities don’t watch out, this is the future of your towns and cities too...

Myself , born and raised in Southern CA and now I hate it, and I am interviewing for jobs in Raleigh. I cannot wait to get out!

As for your pics. Hope this is a small area, and that citizens do what they can to try to change things so this area doe not get worse,
